Troubleshooting The Noisy Fan

It is quite disturbing to listen to the noise from a ceiling fan. More so where it is a bedroom fan and one wants to sleep.

Mending such a fan is very easy and any owner can do it without the help of a trained electrical mechanic. Before getting on to the job, one must have some tools like a screwdriver and a balancing kit for ceiling fans.

First of all, determine if the fan is properly hanged onto the ceiling. Inspect the canopy for any gaps between it and your ceiling. If you observe any gaps, correct by reinstalling the canopy.

Loose screws are a common cause for noisy ceiling fans. Therefore, it is necessary to properly tighten them. Start at the top and work your way to the bottom of the fan. Remove the canopy and tighten the screws which hold the fan onto the junction box.

If in case, you need to replace the canopy, make sure you tighten those screws as well. Tighten the screws that are holding the blades. Tighten the screws holding the blade arms to the motor, followed by the screws holding the blades to the blade holders.

At times, screw tightening solves the problem. However, in case the problem is not properly cured, re balance the blades. The quickest and easiest way to rebalance your ceiling fan is to buy a re-balancing kit from your local hardware store.

Before undertaking the process of balancing a ceiling fan we must switch on the fan and confirm the speed at which the fan produces the noise. Having confirmed that, put off the fan and keep a weighted clip from the balancing kit, on one of the blades. Run the fan and if the noise still persists, repeat the process by shifting the clip onto another blade until the time the noise goes off.

A defective ball bearing may also cause a noisy fan. In such an event a temporary arrangement can be that we run the fan on a lesser speed. Replacement of the worn bearing is the only remedy to this type of problems.
